|TheaterWorks Hartford and ViDCo are thrilled to present Someone Else’s House, “a frightening digital coup-de-theatre” (The New York Times) from Obie-winning writer and performer Jared Mezzocchi, director Margot Bordelon, and creative producer Elizabeth Williamson. Running online October 21–31, this live virtual experience centers on Mezzocchi’s frightening, true-life haunting inside his family’s 200-year-old New England house. “This is my family’s true story,” says Mezzocchi whose creative work during the pandemic was celebrated by The New York Times. “These occurrences took place before I was born, and I’ve spent my whole life frightening my friends with this tale. This past year, I found myself digging deeper into the story – aligning my family’s memories with the actual history of the house and its previous inhabitants. I hope audiences find themselves thrilled by the haunted nature of the experience, as well as able to appreciate mortality, family, and the undeniable need for ghost stories amidst such a challenging time in the world.”
Someone Else’s House is a live virtual performance hosted by Mezzocchi via Zoom complete with audience interaction. The show is not pre-recorded, and no two hauntings are the same. Audiences are encouraged to purchase an enhanced ticket that includes a conjuring packet. Not to be opened until showtime, the packet is a collection of artifacts that will help set the scene for the haunting. With or without the packet, audiences are encouraged to create the right mood – light a candle, grab a blanket, and turn off the lights!
Performances of Someone Else’s House run October 21–31 and take place Tuesday through Sunday at 8pm with additional midnights shows on Saturdays. In-person streaming watch parties will take place at TheaterWorks Hartford’s beloved home, located downtown at 233 Pearl Street, on October 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, and 31 at 8pm. Someone Else’s House is recommended for ages 12 and above. The running time is 70 minutes with no intermission. There is no late seating. Audiences are strongly encouraged to “check-in” at least 20 minutes prior to start time. Enhanced tickets, which include a conjuring packet, must be purchased at least five days in advance of the performance to ensure delivery.
TheaterWorks Harford is a fully vaccinated house and requires all patrons who attend an in-person streaming watch party to show proof of vaccination and to be fully masked inside the building.
Someone Else’s House was first produced in April 2021 as a world premiere production by Geffen Playhouse, in association with Virtual Design Collective, as part of the Los Angeles theater’s groundbreaking Geffen Stayhouse live, virtual and interactive series.

About the Artists
Jared Mezzocchi (writer and performer) is an Obie award winning director and multimedia designer, playwright, and actor. Mezzocchi’s work has spanned all throughout the United States at notable theaters such as: The Kennedy Center, The Geffen Playhouse, Arena Stage, Woolly Mammoth (company member), and many more. In 2016, he received The Lucille Lortel and Henry Hewes Award for his work in Qui Nguyen’s Vietgone at the Manhattan Theatre Club. In 2021, The New York Times highlighted his multimedia work in a spotlight article on his impact during the pandemic. His work was also celebrated as a New York Times Critic Pick on Sarah Gancher’s Russian Troll Farm (Co-Director & Multimedia Designer) where it was praised for being one of the first digitally native successes for virtual theater. Currently, Mezzocchi is creating a new work through his mini-commission at The Vineyard Theatre in New York City entitled On the Beauty of Loss. He is a two-time Macdowell Artist Fellow, a 2012 Princess Grace Award winner, and spends his summers as Producing Artistic Director of Andy’s Summer Playhouse. Outside of his artmaking, Mezzocchi is an Associate Professor at The University of Maryland, where he teaches in the MFA Design Program for the Projection and Multimedia Track and is Associate Director of the School for Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies as well as the Co-Director of the newly announced Brin Institute for New Performance. Margot Bordelon (director) is a New York based director who specializes in new work. Elizabeth Williamson (creative producer) is a dramaturg, director and producer who specializes in new work. Recent projects include dramaturging the Broadway and West End productions of The Inheritance (Tony, Olivier, Critics Circle, Evening Standard, GLAAD, and Drama Desk Awards for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Honoree), A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Tony Award for Best Musical), and Anastasia; directing & adapting Jane Eyre (Hartford Stage), dramaturging Bess Wohl’s Make Believe (Outer Critics Circle Honoree), and directing Sarah Gancher’s Seder (Hartford Stage.) Williamson has worked around the U.S. and internationally at the Young Vic, Figurteatret I Nordland, Primary Stages, Berkeley Rep, ACT, Cal Shakes, Court Theatre, Steppenwolf, About Face, BAPF, La Jolla Playhouse, Theatre de La Jeune Lune, HERE, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and others. She has ser ved as associate artistic director/director of new play development for both Hartford Stage and Pioneer Theatre Company, commissioning and developing work by Kaneza Schaal, Bess Wohl, Matthew Lopez, Sarah Gancher, Dan O’Brien, Mfoniso Udofia, Octavio Solis, Robert Freedman and Scott Frankel, Terence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, Brighde Mullins, and many others.
