Home Made Theater is proud to announce its upcoming production of the timeless Broadway classic, Fiddler on the Roof. Performances will run for two weekends, beginning May 8, at the Anthony “Skip” Scirocco Music Hall located in Saratoga Springs City Hall.
Set in the village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye endeavors to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof features universal themes of tradition that cut across barriers of race, class, and religion, leaving audiences with a poignant mix of laughter, joy, and reflection.
The production is helmed by director and choreographer Johnny Martinez, who previously directed and choreographed She Loves Me for the company. His extensive work with Home Made Theater also includes choreography for Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and The Addams Family: The Musical. Mr. Martinez is also the Co-Director of the Tango Fusion Dance Company. He is joined by musical director Richard Cherry, a veteran of Home Made Theater whose many credits include The Secret Garden, The Sound of Music, and Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure.
When asked why this musical remains a staple of theater, Mr. Martinez noted, “For me, Fiddler expertly captures the values of family, pride, adherence to tradition, and acceptance with its beautiful and stirring music. What holds us together as a society is recognizing our treasured traditions while being able to accept the inevitability of change, in an empathic and understanding way. The love of family, of mankind, of one another is a constant in Fiddler on the Roof. Even during difficult times, it’s what helps us persevere.”
