iTheatre Saratoga is looking to fill two roles for their upcoming June world premiere play reading of IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE. This is an original stage adaptation of the 1930s novel by Sinclair Lewis.
IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE is a cautionary tale about the rise of fascism in the United States. During the presidential election of 1936, Doremus Jessup, a small town newspaper editor, observes with dismay that many of the people he knows support the candidacy of the demagogue Berzelius Windrip. When Windrip wins the election, he forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns America into a totalitarian state.
Rehearsals will be June 22-26 (Mon through Fri) from 10am-2pm with performances on Fri June 26th at 7pm and Sat June 27th at 7pm. All rehearsals and performances will take place at Saratoga Arts located at 320 Broadway in Saratoga Springs.
This is a large ensemble reading that is mainly cast. The two roles we are looking to fill are:
PHILIP – 20s-30s. Doremus Jessup’s son. Harvard educated attorney. Sees the shifting current of the political climate and throws his support behind the rising regime.
BUCK – 30s-40s. One of Doremus’ closest friends. Financially comfortable. Rugged man’s man and confirmed bachelor. Goes all in for Doremus and the New Underground.
