The Sharon Playhouse is now accepting applications for our 2023 Apprentice Program.
This unique program is designed to open the door to college theater artists and early-career professionals, giving them the opportunity to get practical experience as team members in a nurturing and collaborative regional theater company.
Details of the Apprentice Program:
- Apprentices must be 18 years of age or older.
- Apprentices must be able to work 40 hours per week (five to six days).
- The dates of the 12-week, full time Apprentice Program are Monday June 5 – Sunday, August 27th, 2023.
- Apprentices will receive a $300 weekly stipend.
- Housing is available for apprentices in the Sharon Playhouse onsite dormitories. Apprentices will get their own bedroom.
- Each apprentice will have a primary concentration as well as additional duties in secondary aspects of theater production.
- Apprentices must provide their own transportation.
- Apprentices will receive professional development and incredible networking opportunities.
Concentrations are available in the following areas:
- Costume Apprentice
The Costume Apprentice will assist the Costume Shop Manager, Costume Designers, and Youth Theater Costume Director with the execution of all elements related to costuming. They will interact with directors and actors to help the shows run smoothly; assist with the wardrobe during shows; help pull, buy, and/or rent costume pieces and accessories; assist in fittings and alterations of costumes; and assist with costume construction, maintenance and other support. The Costume Apprentice will work on the mainstage productions of Something Rotten and Oliver, and all Youth Theater Shows (i.e., Peter and the Starcatcher, A Year with Frog and Toad, Kids, Disney’s Newsies Jr., and Sharon Playhouse Stars.) - Lighting Apprentice
The Lighting Apprentice will work collaboratively alongside the Technical Director, Lighting Designers, and Production Electrician. They will assist in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of the lighting instruments, lighting hang, and lighting designs. The Lighting Apprentice will gain experience working with the current drafting software and lighting control systems. This position will require climbing ladders, working at heights, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The Lighting Apprentice will assist on the mainstage productions of Something Rotten and Oliver, assist with the Patio Cabarets, and serve as Lighting Designer for all of the Youth Theater shows (under the guidance of the Resident Lighting Designer). The 2023 Youth Theater shows include Peter and the Starcatcher, A Year with Frog and Toad, Kids, Disney’s Newsies Jr., and Sharon Playhouse Stars. - Sound Apprentice
The Sound Apprentice will work closely with the Technical Director, Resident Sound Designers, and Audio Engineers to deepen the skills required for a professional audio career. They will learn and operate the digital sound console, program, and operate the Q-Lab computerized sound playback system, operate, and maintain body microphones, as well as source and create sound cues for production. The Sound Apprentice will assist on the mainstage productions of Something Rotten and Oliver, assist with the Patio Cabarets, and serve as Audio Engineer running sound for all Youth Theater shows. The 2023 Youth Theater shows include Peter and the Starcatcher, A Year with Frog and Toad, Kids, Disney’s Newsies Jr., and Sharon Playhouse Stars. - Production Management and Props Apprentice
The Production Management and Props Apprentice will work closely with the Production Manager/Props Director on all aspects of theater production for the summer season. This position will provide support for all technical departments, including scheduling, creating, and tracking purchase orders and recording/distributing notes from all production meetings. The Production Management and Props Apprentice will assist on the mainstage productions of Something Rotten and Oliver and take the lead in production managing the Youth Theater shows. The 2023 Youth Theater shows include Peter and the Starcatcher, A Year with Frog and Toad, Kids, Disney’s Newsies Jr., and Sharon Playhouse Stars. It would be beneficial (but not required) if the person in this role had basic painting skills.
