Lenox— On Saturday, August 24th at 4 p.m., Ventfort Hall Gilded Age Mansion & Museum, in partnership with the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum, presents “Someone Must Wash the Dishes: An Anti-suffrage Satire,” a one-woman political satire portrayed by professional actress Michèle LaRue.

Written in 1912, by Marie Jenney Howe, a prominent pro-Suffragist and Unitarian minister, Howe satirizes arguments seen as accurate in their day, though absurd in ours. This fictional “Anti” sincerely believes being a “womanly woman” will keep the home intact and save the nation from anarchy. American women won the vote in 1920, following a 72-year battle against—not only male—but female Anti-suffragists. As this year’s key Election Day approaches, take a break to discover that history—and to savor some laughs.
