Home Made Theater announces auditions for The Boxcar Children: adapted by Jon Jory from the book by Gertrude Chandler Warner
Directed by Brigid Beck.
This one-act production tells the classic story of four newly-orphaned children working together to create a life for themselves in the small New England town of Middlesex in the mid-1920s. Led by an ever-observant Stage Manager, the story is bound to tug on the heartstrings of every audience member. Some actors will be asked to play multiple roles.
Roles:
- Stage Manager: The narrator of our story, who breaks the fourth-wall with the audience in order to bring them along for the story. In their words, the Stage Manager “makes sure the story gets told.”
- Henry (plays15 years old): The oldest of the Boxcar Children, Henry is determined and hard-working.
- Jess (plays 14 years old): The eldest daughter, the practical Jess makes sure her siblings are fed and kept in-line. Jess will also cover lines assigned to the “Offstage Voice.”
- Violet (plays 12 years old): Thoughtful and kind, Violet brings sweetness to the family. Violet will double as “Girl at the Race.”
- Benny (plays 8 years old): Straight-forward and funny, Benny is the youngest of the Boxcar Children. Is also assigned lines for “Alex Dredel”
- Dr. Mcallister: 40’s The town doctor who takes the Boxcar Children under his wing. Will also cover lines for the Milkman.
- JH Cordyce: Elderly.The richest man in town, JH Cordyce is opinionated and old-school. Under all that gruff, however, is a heart of gold. Will also cover Mr. Johnson lines.
- Mrs. Mcallister: 60-70’s The doctor’s mother. Will also cover lines for Miss Emma and Flora Burrows.
- Mrs. Tolliver: Any age, The first person to help the Boxcar Children. She will also cover lines for Woman with the Clipboard, Janice and Mary Flynn.
Audition Dates and Times: 4.00-6.00 p.m. Sunday Oct 26th and 6.00-8.00 Monday October 27th.
If callbacks are necessary, they will take place 6-8 p.m. Oct. 28.
