In the Next Room or the vibrator play is a comedy about marriage, intimacy, and the dawn of electricity. Set in the 1880s, Dr. Givings, a scientist, unknowingly revolutionizes the treatment of “hysteria” with his new invention—the vibrator. As new patients and their relationships intertwine with his own household, his wife begins to question what’s really happening in the next room, leading to revelations about love, desire, and connection.
