Albany Civic Theater is about to be taken over by the one, the only, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
With just three cast members (more if you count the puppets), Hedwig and the Angry Inch fits comfortably on the Albany Civic stage. But we’re expecting to blow the roof off every night.
A smash hit off Broadway and on, this Obie-winning rock musical tells the story of internationally-ignored song stylist and problematic non-binary trans icon Hedwig Schmidt.
Backed by their hard-rocking band, “The Angry Inch,” Hedwig tells the hilarious and heartbreaking story of their larger-than-life life, their messy relationship to the rock superstar Tommy Gnosis, and Tommy’s ride to fame on the songs Hedwig wrote for him during their brief combustible relationship. It’s a rocking, funny, bawdy, and ultimately inspiring story for anyone who’s felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.
This production is a complete re-invention of the now-established way the show is usually performed. While keeping all the razor sharp edges, the soul-rattling sound, and the divinely sacrilegious wit, the performance is asking new questions, interrogating previously held ideas about the characters, and, if Grace is dispensed at the end, it will not come cheap.
Opening May 15, previewing Thursday May 14, and running for 3 weeks.
With Leo Grinsberg, Amanda Dorman, and Chris Kowalksi .
