PLAY SYNOPSIS:

Norma Brown is everything a proper young society girl should be: obedient, quiet, malleable and undemanding. She is betrothed to Schuyler Grogan, son of a wealthy local family. Everything about her life is perfect… or is it? Norma can’t seem to feel the same joy and satisfaction that her mother, and Schuyler and his parents all feel. In fact, she can’t feel much of anything. Will she learn that sometimes true happiness can be achieved only by marching to the beat of a different drummer? Or will her oppressive upbringing keep her from finding the courage to take a chance?

This critically acclaimed play has fairy tale elements, doses of comedy and a fair amount of drama. It also marked the first time prolific music composer, Steven Sondheim’s work was heard on the Broadway stage.

CHARACTERS:

CAMILLA JABLONSKI (45-65 yo) – Mother of Aaron Jablonski. She is an exuberant and attractive woman; an unconventional free-spirit who bore a child out of wedlock. She lives year-round with her son, on an island any civilized person would realize is only suitable as a summer retreat.

AARON JABLONSKI (early-mid 20’s) – Camilla’s son. A very handsome, ne’er-do-well handyman. He is uncouth and very outspoken.

LILY BROWN (45-65 yo) – Widoed mother of Norma and Cary Brown. She is girlish, flowery and clinging. She speaks with a Southern accent. She and her son, Cary, perform a “nutty little ceremony” every day, lowering the American flag, while Deedee blows a bugle.

NORMA BROWN (early-mid 20’s) – Lily’s daughter. A narcoleptic bride-to-be, engaged to Schuyler Grogan, scion of a wealthy local family. She is a proper young society girl: obedient, quiet, malleable and undemanding.

CARY BROWN (10-12 yo) – Norma’s younger brother, an unpleasant nuisance of a boy.

DEEDEE GROGAN (45-65 yo) – Mother of Schuyler Grogan. Angular, attractive and very chic. She is always smoking. Deedee and her husband, Tucker, are very anxious to meet their future daughter-in-law. She is, however, none-too-pleased to discover that the summer house Lily Brown has rented for them, is owned by Camilla Jablonski, the source of strife in their marriage.

TUCKER GROGAN (45-65 yo) – Father of Schuyler Grogan. Tucker strayed 21 years earlier, during one of his wife, Deedee’s pregnancies, becoming romantically involved with Camilla Jablonski. Aaron Jablonski was born of their indiscretion, although Tucker never knew about him.

SCHUYLER GROGAN (early-mid 20’s) – Son of Tucker and Deedee Grogan, engaged to be married to Norma Brown. A very handsome, but boring young lawyer.

Looking for strong actors who will bring out the humor of the play, as well as the tension and conflict. Auditioners will be asked to read scenes from the script. If you are younger or older than the age ranges listed, but feel that you can portray any of these characters, please do not hesitate to audition.
