http://www.blacktheatretroupeupstateny.orgThe Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY (BTTUNY) is proud to kick off their 2021-22 Season with an outdoor production and Regional Premiere of BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara co-directed by David Girard and Jean-Remy Monnay.
BARBECUE centers around the O’Mallery’s, a dysfunctional family who have gathered in their local park to share some barbecue and straight talk with their sister Barbara, whose spiral of drugs and recklessness has forced her siblings to stage an open-air intervention. But the event becomes raucous and unpredictable as familial stereotypes collide with hard realities, and racial politics slam up against the stories we tell – and maybe even believe – about who we were and who we’ve become.
BARBECUE will take place at outdoors at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence (at 194 Livingston Ave, Albany, NY 12210) with performances on August 20-22 and 27-29 at 6pm. Tickets are $20 general, and $15 for students and seniors. To purchase tickets, you may visit BTTUNY’s website at this direct link: www.blacktheatretroupeupstateny.org/season/barbecue.
BTTUNY is thrilled to welcome back Angelique Powell and Morgan Heyward, both of whom last appeared in 2019?s production of “The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington,” as well as taking part in BTTUNY’s partnership with Capital Repertory Theatre, Troy Foundry Theatre and several other local companies with 8:46, a theatrical response to the tragic murder of George Floyd and the series of murders and assaults of black Americans over the past weeks, years and decades. The cast also features former actor Monet Thompson who most recently starred in BTTUNY’s 2020 production of “The Niceties.”
BTTUNY is also proud to welcome local actress Benita Zahn into the cast of BARBECUE. Benita has been a fixture on area stages throughout the years in addition to being a celebrated and Emmy-award winning local news anchor
Rounding out the cast are local actors Nick Foster, Kathy Glasser, Angela Ledtke, Deborah Lombard, Iniabasi Nelson and Lana Rose.
