Fort Salem Theater announces auditions for THE MUSIC MAN

Please prepare approximately 1-minute of music in the style of the show. Singing from the show is welcome, but not required. An accompanist will be provided – no prerecorded tracks, please. Be prepared to read from the script and/or dance, if requested.

Actors must be able to provide proof of completed COVID vaccination 2 weeks prior to the start of rehearsals. A COVID compliance officer will be present at auditions.

All roles are currently available and are open to actors of all ethnicities and gender identities.

Each actor will receive a minimum of two complimentary tickets. Travel and stipends are not available at this time.

Rehearsal details:
Rehearsals will begin on or around Monday, January 31st, 2022. Rehearsals will typically be Sundays-Thursday from 7PM-10PM. Actors will only be called to rehearsals as necessary and will not be required to attend daily until tech week, starting March 6th. When possible, child roles will be released early.

Character breakdown:

Harold Hill (adult, male identifying) – Our story’s unsuspecting protagonist. A con man, traveling under the auspices of a salesman, he eventually falls in love with Marian Paroo. Charismatic and charming. Vocal range top: F4 | Vocal range bottom: Ab2

Marcellus Washburn (adult, male identifying) – Harold’s chummy old friend and former con man, he now lives in River City and is trying to settle down. Vocal range top: A4 | Vocal range bottom: G2

Mayor Shinn (adult 50+, male identifying) – A blustery politician who is all too “self-important.” Begrudgingly married to Eulalie, he is skeptical of the town rumor mill. Any voice type.

Ewart Dunlop (adult, male identifying) – A member of the quartet formed by Harold Hill with a tenor voice. Ewart is married to Maude Dunlop. Vocal range top: F5 | Vocal range bottom: F3

Oliver Hix (adult, male identifying) – A baritone in the quartet formed by Hill. Oliver is married to Alma Hix. Vocal range top: F4 | Vocal range bottom: B2

Jacey Squires (adult, male identifying) – The highest tenor in the quartet. Married to Mrs. Squires. Vocal range top: C5 | Vocal range bottom: C3

Olin Britt (adult, male identifying) – A citizen of River City and the bass of the quartet formed by Harold Hill. Vocal range top: C4 | Vocal range bottom: F2

Tommy Djilas (late teen, male identifying) An attractive, young man from the wrong side of town. He is secretly courting Zaneeta. Any voice type.Winthrop Paroo (stage age 8-12, male identifying) – Marian’s baby brother, he is very shy because of a noticeable lisp. Embraces Harold Hill and the marching band. Vocal range top: Eb5 | Vocal range bottom: C4

Charlie Cowell (adult, male identifying)- A traveling salesman who is on to Harold Hill’s schemes. Tirelessy attempts to prove to everyone the true con man behind Harold Hill. Any voice type.

Marian Paroo (adult, female identifying) – The small town librarian and music teacher. She is an attractive young lady who eventually falls for Harold Hill. Stuck up. Curious. Vocal range top: A5 | Vocal range bottom: G3

Mrs. Paroo (adult, female identifying) – Cheerful and always plotting. An Irish widow and mother to Marian and Winthrop. Vocal range top: Eb5 | Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Amaryllis (stage age 8-12, female identifying) – A slightly bratty piano student of Marion Paroo. Vocal range top: E5 | Vocal range bottom: C4

Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn (adult, female identifying) – Mayor Shinn’s peacock wife. A serial gossiper and snob, she has trouble keeping her opinions to herself. Vocal range top: D5 | Vocal range bottom: D4

Zaneeta Shinn (teen, female identifying) – The Mayor’s fresh-faced daughter who is in love with Tommy. Sweet and outgoing. Appears to be daffy at times. Any voice type.

Alma Hix (adult, female identifying) – A “Pick-a-Little Lady” married to Oliver Hix. Any voice type.

Maud Dunlop (adult, female identifying) – A “Pick-a-Little Lady” married to Ewart Dunlop. Any voice type.

Ethel Toffelmier (adult, female identifying) – A comical “Pick-a-Little Lady,” and Marcellus Washburn’s girlfriend. Any voice type.

Mrs. Squires (adult, female identifying) A “Pick-a-Little Lady” married to Jacey Squires. Any voice type.

Youth Ensemble – Singers, dancers, and actors of all ages, genders, physical types.
