Corie and Paul Bratter are a newlywed couple. For their first home, they live in an apartment on the top floor of a brownstone in New York City in the early 1960’s. Corie is optimistic about their future together, while Paul, the more anxious and grounded half of the couple, worries about the various flaws in the apartment, such as a hole in the skylight, their leaky closet, and the lack of a bathtub. Shortly after moving in, Corie attempts to set her mother up with their eccentric neighbor Mr. Velasco. During the course of four days, the couple learns to live together while facing the usual daily ups-and-downs. Corie wants Paul to become more easy-going: for example, to run “barefoot in the park”.
Available Roles:
Corie Bratter – (female identifying, 20s-early 30s) Corie is young, bright and head-over-heels in love with her newlywed husband, Paul. Corie wants to seize every moment and adventure as she carves out their new life together. Her insatiable spirit creates sparkling moments, but her immaturity leads to conflict.
Paul Bratter – (male identifying, 20s-early 30s ) – A responsible, doting, very in-love husband. Now that the honeymoon is over, Paul is focusing on his budding career as a lawyer. He can be brazen, but his practical approach to life balances his new marriage.
Ethel Banks (female identifying, 40s-60s) – Corie’s mother. Now, Corie is moved out and Ethel is an empty-nester and is unsure what her next move is as a single, unattached woman. She is excited to watch Corie and Paul turn into young adults, even though her daughter’s approach may be a little mystifying to her.
Victor Velasco (male identifying, 40s-60s) – The worldly and eccentric attic-dwelling neighbor to Paul and Corie. He and Corie share the same “carpe diem” spirit — his nights are filled with exotic foods, obscure cosmopolitan nightspots, and serenades.
Telephone Repair Person (any age) – installs and repairs the Bratters’ phone. Cameo
Delivery Person (any age) – delivers packages to Bratters’ 5th floor apartment. Cameo
Actors of any gender and race are encouraged and welcomed to audition.
