Actors needed for a new historical play based upon the life of Eunice Chapman. This play is currently a work in progress and changes may be made during the rehearsal process.
The story: In the early 19th century, Eunice Chapman’s children had been taken away from her by her husband, James. At a time when American women had neither property rights nor civil rights, Eunice was a revolutionary force in her steadfast efforts to reclaim her children. She eventually went on to obtain the first legislative divorce in New York State history.
Rehearsals starting July 10th, 4 nights per week. Performances on August 11th and 12th at the Park Theater in Glens Falls. Available roles:
James Chapman: Age 21 to 45. Abusive, alcoholic husband of Eunice.
Catherine Bonnel: 18+. Has an almost identical experience to Eunice in having her children stolen. Also narrates the story.
Sister#1/Mrs. Coopers: 18+. Shaker sister/Mrs. Coopers supports Eunice through the lowest point in her life.
Elder Hannah/Mrs. Geddis: 18+. Elder Hannah is a leader in the Shaker community, unsympathetic to Eunice and Catherine. Mrs. Geddis is a witness in the trial in support of Eunice.
Committee Man/Sheriff Moses Johnson: 18+. Trial coordinator and law enforcement agent.
Sally: 18+ Eunice’s sister.
Deric Veeder: 18+. Escaped from the Shaker community. Witness at Eunice’s trial.
Mother Lucy: 18+. Shaker community leader. Allows children to be taken from “outsider” mothers.
George: 8 to 13 years of age, then 18+ by end of play. Son of Eunice and James.
Susan: 8 to 13 years of age, then 18+ by end of play. Daughter of Eunice and James. Also doubles as boy #2.
Julia: 7 to 10 years of age, then 15 by the end of play. Daughter of Eunice and James. Also doubles as boy #1.
Elder Seth: 35+. Shaker leader. Supports and defends James.
Brother #1: 18+ Shaker community member. Right hand man of Elder Seth.
