SLOC Musical Theater never charges artists of any age tuition or fees to participate in our productions.
Audition Dates:
Friday, July 7, 2023 and Saturday, July 8, 2023 for adults and kids
Sign in begins at 6:30 pm. Auditions begin at 7:00 pm
Additionally, there will be an extra audition slot on Saturday, July 8, 2023 for auditioners entering 8th grade in the fall or younger. Sign-in begins at 1:30 pm. Audition at 2:00 pm.
You only need to attend one of these sessions
Callbacks will be by invitation only on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 pm

Performance Dates:
Sept. 15-17, 2023 and Sept. 21-24, 2023

What to Prepare:
● Please prepare 16 to 32 bars of music from a Broadway show – ideally in a style similar to the show or from the show itself.
● An accompanist will be provided so please have sheet music in the correct key.
● Readings from the script will be provided at auditions.
● Please bring appropriate dance clothing/shoes as everyone will participate in a dance call during auditions.
Rehearsals:
● Rehearsals will be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, from 7:00 pm-10:00 pm, and on Sunday afternoons 2:00 pm-5:00 pm. This is subject to change based on cast/crew availability.
● Rehearsals will begin on Monday, July 10th
● There will be a photo shoot day TBD based on cast/crew availability.
● Attendance is mandatory for Theater Clean-Up Day (Saturday, September 10) and Tech Week (Sunday, September 11 – Thursday, September 14) as well as all performances.
About The Show:
Based on the twisted genius of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, Matilda the Musical brings the whimsical tale of the precocious, magical, child genius Matilda Wormwood to life as she overcomes her ignorant parents, inspires her caring and timid teacher, Miss Honey, and defies the monstrous and cruel Agatha Trunchbull
CHARACTERS
Please note actors should be able to play the age ranges noted, but we will consider children entering 8th grade in the fall or younger for any of the kids roles and adults age 18 and older for all other roles.
Matilda Wormwood (Female Identifying)
Imaginative and clever. Wise far beyond her years, with a strong sense of justice.
Age: to play 5 to 10 years old
Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Any)
The cruel and vindictive headmistress of Crunchem Academy. A bully and tyrant who physically and mentally tortures her students and faculty. Once an Olympic hammer thrower
Age: to play 35 to 55
Miss Honey (Female Identifying)
Matilda’s kind-hearted teacher. Lives in fear of Miss Trunchbull, but protects her students as much as she can.
Age: to play 25 to 40
Mr. Wormwood (Male Identifying)
Matilda’s neglectful and mean father. A slimy used car salesman who values dishonesty, ignorance, and television.
Age: to play 35 to 45
Mrs. Wormwood (Female Identifying)
Matilda’s self-absorbed, negligent mother. An amateur ballroom dancer who values volume over substance.
Age: to play 35 to 45
Michael Wormwood (Male Identifying)
Matilda’s brother. He is not very bright, and consequently their parents’ favorite.
Age: to play 10 to 15
Bruce Bogtrotter (Male Identifying)
Matilda’s classmate with a penchant for eating. Subject of The Trunchbull’s cruelest punishment.
Age: to play 5 to 10
Lavender (Female Identifying)
Matilda’s classmate. She declares herself Matilda’s best friend on the first day. Likes creepy crawlies.
Age: to play 5 to 10
Mrs. Phelps (Female Identifying)
Local librarian enamored with Matilda’s creativity. She unknowingly gives Matilda a safe space from her abusive family.
The Escapologist (Male Identifying)
A character in one of Matilda’s stories that she tells Mrs. Phelps, a daring and brave tragic hero. Appears with Ensemble throughout. Dance heavy
The Acrobat (Female Identifying)
A character in Matilda’s story. Loving, kind, and tragic. Appears with Ensemble throughout. Dance Heavy
Adult Ensemble (18 or older)
A small, tight ensemble that plays numerous roles throughout, including parents, doctors, nurses, a child’s birthday clown, ballroom dancers, big kids, Russian mobsters, and more.
Kids (entering 8th grade in the fall or younger)
A small ensemble of Matilda’s classmates that grow and learn with her. They support each other through Trunchbull’s cruelty and defy her in their own ways. Amanda, Nigel, Eric, Alice, Hortensia, Tommy
SLOC Musical Theater pledges to continue to advocate for, and is aiming to build a diverse cast reflective of the Schenectady community. Any and all ethnicities, BIPOC actors and actors of all gender identities are encouraged to audition for all roles. Please join us!
