Film Tells Story Originally Explored in Suzanne Strempek Shea Book “This is Paradise,” and One-Woman Play Mags

West Springfield, MA (9/8/23) – West Springfield’s Majestic Theater will host a screening of the documentary film In the Name of the Son on Tuesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m.  The story chronicles the story of Mags Riordan, whose son Billy tragically died while on holiday at Cape Maclear, Malawi, also known as the “warm heart of Africa.”

Determined to honor her son’s memory, Mags left her home in Dingle, Ireland and traveled to Malawi, one of the poorest counties in the world.  The contrast between the natural beauty of the area and the extreme poverty there inspired her to establish a health clinic, since the nearest medical facility was miles away and virtually unreachable to the local villagers.  Thus, Billy’s Malawi Project was born.

Pioneer Valley author Suzanne Strempek Shea wrote the book “This is Paradise” about Mags’ mission to honor her late son.  The Majestic Theater also presented the one-woman play Mags with actor Cate Damon in the lead role.  Billy and Mags’ story has now become immortalized in the documentary “In the Name of the Son.”

The viewing of the fundraising documentary will be followed by a talkback with Mags Riordan and filmmaker Mark McLoughlin.  Tickets are $20 and may be purchased in advance by calling or visiting the Majestic box office, or they may be purchased at the door.
