Fort Salem Theater will hold auditions for Into the Woods auditions Monday, January 29, Tuesday, January 30 and Callbacks on Wednesday, January 31.  All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities and gender identities.

For auditions, please prepare approximately 1-minute of a song that showcases your talents. Choosing a selection from the callback sides (available here) is suggested, but not required. You may be asked to sing additional music and/or read from the script. An accompanist will be provided. If you are unable to attend auditions, please submit a video from the sides below as soon as possible to Kyle@FortSalem.com.

Rehearsal for Into The Woods will begin on or around Sunday, February 18, 2024. Rehearsals will typically be held Sundays from 6PM-10PM, Monday-Thursday from 7PM-10PM, pending the availability of the cast and the needs of the show. However, the actual schedule will be determined by the cast and director’s availability. A full calendar will be provided by the first rehearsal.

Each actor will receive a minimum of two complimentary tickets. Actors who participate in 2024 productions will also receive a free 12-month invitation to opening weekends for all MainStage productions. At this time, housing, travel & performance stipends are not available.

Character descriptions (all roles open to all ethnicities and gender identities):

BAKER: Average working man, warm-hearted and sincere, but protective of his family. Strong Actor/Singer. Baritone: A-High G

JACK: The feckless giant killer. Eager to please, genuine/sincere, impulsive, a little slow of learning and misled by his lack of self knowledge. High overall singing range, requires lovely lyric tenor quality. Youthful. Tenor: A-High G (Note: Role may be cast as either a teenage or adult. All ages are welcome to audition.)

BAKER’S WIFE: Determined and bright. A romantic at heart, but materialistic at times. Strong Actor/Singer. Mezzo-Soprano: G-High F

THE WITCH: Outwardly: self-serving, possessive, sarcastic, vain, charismatic. Inwardly Insecure & lonely. Strong Actor/Singer.. Mezzo-Soprano: Low F-High F w/good belt

CINDERELLA: Earnest, pretty, warm-hearted, kind, trying to find her place in the world. Survivor. Soprano: G-High G

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Spoiled, clever, strong-willed, and naive. Seeks approval in place of love, which she is profoundly lacking. Adult or teen playing a child. Mezzo-Soprano: B-High F. (Note: Role may be cast as either a teenage or adult. All ages are welcome to audition.)

CINDERELLA’S PRINCE: Vain, gorgeous, endlessly confident, a hero to himself. Womanizer. Can be selected to double as the Wolf. Baritone: B-High F

MYSTERIOUS MAN: Mischievous vagrant and good-natured protector all in one. May need to be a physical actor/mover. Mostly acting role with one big musical number. Baritone: G-High E flat

NARRATOR: Intellectual and pleasant. A good storyteller who relates with the audience. Mainly spoken role. Baritone: G-High E

RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE: Vain, gorgeous, not as tall as his older brother, Cinderella’s Prince. Baritone: C sharp-High E

WOLF: Hungry and insatiable. seductive and alluring. Strong Singer Actor. Baritone: B-High G flat

RAPUNZEL: Loopy, lovely, and lonely. Needs good vocal control. Strong high soprano. High Soprano: C-High A sharp

JACK’S MOTHER: Hard-working, independent, but weary single mother. Soprano: B-High F sharp

CINDERELLA’S STEPMOTHER: Mean-spirited, greedy, demanding. Superb character. Mezzo-Soprano: A sharp-High F

LUCINDA: Cinderella’s stepsister. Loud and energetic. Mezzo-Soprano: C-High E  

FLORINDA: Cinderella’s stepsister. Loud and energetic. Mezzo-Soprano: C-High E

GRANNY: Red Riding Hood’s feisty, bitter, vindictive grandmother, good comedic timing. No solo singing. May double with another minor role. Open Vocal Range.

CINDERELLA’S MOTHER: Nurturing and loving. A spirit guarding her daughter from a tree with good advice. May double with another minor role. Soprano

SNOW WHITE: Cameo Role. No solo singing. May double with another minor role. Open Vocal Range.

SLEEPING BEAUTY: Cameo Role. No solo singing. May double with another minor role. Open Vocal Range.

GIANT: Female: loud, angry, offstage voice only. No solo singing. May double with another minor role. Open Vocal Range.

STEWARD: Works for Cinderella’s Prince. Surly and bureaucratic. No solo singing.

CINDERELLA’S FATHER: Intellectual, out of touch with family, but harmless and well-meaning. No solo singing. Open vocal range.
