Rhinebeck Theatre Society is proud to present Still We Rise, a special one-weekend only engagement, February 16-18, celebrating the poetry of Maya Angelou through contemporary new work. Bringing together artists and performers of all ages from across the Hudson Valley, the performance centers artists of color in our community and creates a new, celebratory lens for Angelou’s work.
In addition to interview clips and archival footage of Angelou herself, performances will feature original choreography, music, visual art, and theater by premiere Hudson Valley creators, including Willie Mae Brown, Angela Dixon, Amelia King, Manar Hashmi, Phyllis Harris, Jabez Jackson, Krieger Elementary School students, Jennelle Liscombe, Marlene Merritt, Marcus McGregor, Hristian Dsouza Michaeli, Ryan Michki, Michael Monasterial, Kitt Potter, Adam Reid, and Liz Thomas.
Rhinebeck Theatre Society has also partnered with Arts Mid-Hudson’s current art show, “Still We Rise”, to feature projections of artwork by Audrey Anastasi, Gülnar Babayeva, Harrison Brisbon-McKinnon, Dorothy Brodhead, Martial Davis, Priscilla DeConti, Marielena Ferrer, Katrina Ganpatt, Karen E. Gersch, LotuZ, Gwen Laster, Elinor Levy, Barbara Masterson, Susan Miiller, Shirley Parker-Benjamin, Leon Tillman, LisaDeLoria Weinblatt.
Says producer Dot Luongo, “Throughout Maya Angelou’s work, there are consistent threads of courage, pride, and frank appraisal. Artists were able to use these themes as they developed their work, and it is really moving to see it all come together. Amazingly, hardly any of the creators knew each other prior to this event, so we truly feel like we are forging a new community based on something groundbreaking.”
Still We Rise runs for one weekend only at The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck (661, Route 308, Rhinebeck, NY 12572). Friday, February 16 and Saturday, February 17 performances are at 8pm and the Sunday, February 18 performance is at 3pm. Tickets are $20, with a special $5 child price ticket, and may be reserved by visiting https://www.centerforperformingarts.org or calling 845-876-3080.
