SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Home Made Theater is delighted to announce the return of its family-friendly holiday tradition with a heart-warming production of The Boxcar Children, running from Thursday, December 4th through Sunday, December 7th. Performances will take place at the Anthony “Skip” Scirocco Music Hall in Saratoga Springs City Hall.
A Beloved Classic Takes the Stage
Jon Jory’s touching and magical adaptation brings to life the classic story by teacher Gertrude Chandler Warner. The Boxcar Children follows four precocious orphans as they find their way in a small New England town, a tale of resilience and family that is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages. The production uses a meta-theatrical approach, featuring a bare stage and suggested props, guided by an ever-observant Stage Manager.
The production marks the New York directing debut of Brigid Beck, a Texas native recently transplanted to the Capital District. Ms. Beck, who previously directed productions like Godspell and Fiddler on the Roof, has a personal connection to the source material.
“Directing this show is especially meaningful to me, as I used to read (and loved!) the books as a kid,” says Beck. “The stories, which are about children who face food insecurity, homelessness, and other hardships, stuck with me and informed my work supporting at-risk and homeless high school students.”
Home Made Theater Partners with Franklin Community Center for Holiday Food Drive
In keeping with the play’s themes of hardship and community support, Home Made Theater will host a food and hygiene drive during the show’s run to benefit the Franklin Community Center.
The organization will collect donations of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products at all performances. Monetary donations will also be accepted to help address real-life food insecurity in the community.
