One of the most produced plays in the world, the vignette-style piece will round out a record year of readings from the Tivoli-based company

Tivoli, NY, December 2, 2025 – Tangent Theatre Company, based in Tivoli NY, has presented a record number of pop-up play readings over the past year, with their next and final performance of 2025 a presentation of the contemporary crowd-pleaser ALMOST, MAINE by John Cariani, to be held Sunday, December 14, 2025 at Village Hall, Tivoli NY. Two shows are on tap as the afternoon reading is already sold-out, and now with an encore evening performance added to accommodate demand. Show #1 is at 4pm (doors open 3pm ) with a waiting list; show #2 is at 7:30pm (doors 7pm), seats currently available. Tickets are free, though reservations are required and can be made by emailing info@tangent-arts.org; donations are welcome. Set in a fictional Maine town against the backdrop of a wintry landscape and the northern lights, the play is a series of vignettes that touch on love, friendship and whimsy – even with a splash of mysticism.

With a cast of eight premier actors, the reading marks the largest ensemble the company has featured to date: Brendan Burke*, Molly McClarnon, Maggie Adams McDowell*, Ann Osmond*, Audrey Rapoport*, Tangent’s Artistic Director Michael Rhodes*, Doug Trapp* and Steven Young reading stage directions; produced by Andrea Rhodes (* member Actors’ Equity Association). Tangent’s readings have become a popular series in Tivoli and beyond, often presented in pubs, restaurants or unique intimate spaces – including the Stissing Center in Pine Plains, Upstate Films in Rhinebeck and The Moviehouse in Millerton. Now in their 25th year, Tangent celebrated the milestone in mid-October with an evening of “Scenes & Celebration” marking a series of favorite scenes from over the years along with snippets from possible future shows, all to a full house; Tangent recently appeared at The Moviehouse for their reading of Annapurna by Sharr White in September. Other notable readings this year included American Buffalo by David Mamet, Betrayal by Harold Pinter and Summer, 1976 by David Auburn, to name a few. Tangent’s trademark readings showcase plays with actors sitting on bar stools, scripts in hand and with no props, miming or blocking; stage directions are read to orient the audience, move the story along and help visualize the play. Tangent’s readings in recent years have all enjoyed sold out shows.

“This has been an epic year for Tangent. We’ve presented so many great plays and are lucky to work with some of the best talent in the region” says Michael Rhodes. “Almost, Maine is lighter than our usual fare, but just as high-impact. I was in this play in Dublin in 2010, an AboutFACE Ireland presentation. I am very much looking forward to mining this field again and sharing this lovely piece with our audience” he adds.
