Next to Normal
Music by Tom Kitt
Book & Lyrics by Brian Yorkey
Directed by Sean Baldwin & Eleah Jayne
Music Direction by James Alexander
The widely acclaimed modern musical that hit the Broadway stage in 2009 follows the seemingly average lives of an American suburban family, slowly unraveling to reveal fractures within the perceived “normal” family dynamic. Audiences learn that Diana Goodman – faithful and loving mother constantly rushing to balance all the spinning plates – is battling severe bi-polar disorder and depression. As the trials from her mental health take a toll on her life and her family, the grief and hardships buried beneath begin to surface; taking audiences into the raw, exposed minds and hearts of the characters within (and near to) the Goodman family. Tackling topics of grief, ethics in modern psychiatry, codependency and feeling stuck in a monotonous life routine, Next to Normal is told through a rolling and ragged Tony Award-winning musical score of rock and rock ballads – presenting this story with vulnerability, and heart.
Content Advisory Warning: Please be advised that Next to Normal includes depictions and representations of various mental health conditions/disorders including anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. The musical also includes depictions and discussions of substance use, self-harm, death, grief and medical trauma.
ABOUT OUR PRODUCTION
A cast of local musical theater powerhouses fill out this ensemble: featuring Adrienne Parker as Diana Goodman, Kevin O’Toole as Dan Goodman, Sam Rigney as Natalie Goodman, Kason Mulderry as Gabe Goodman, Jack Barcomb as Henry, and Cameron Richardson as Dr.Fine/Dr. Madden.
In their first directing collaboration, Sean T. Baldwin (last featured at Steamer 10 as Ricky Potts in Ride the Cyclone) and Eleah Jayne (Executive Artistic Director of Steamer No.10 Theatre) join forces to bring Next to Normal to Albany this January. Both with decades of creative experience on and off the stage with area theatres, Sean Baldwin has most recently served as president of Confetti Stage Inc. and will soon be gearing up to direct the upcoming production of American Idiot at Schenectady Light Opera Company (SLOC), while Eleah Jayne will be found both fight choreographing at multiple local theatres as well as directing with Theater Voices and Creative Action Unlimited later this Spring! Musical direction is helmed by theater veteran James Alexander, a Schenectady based Bass-Baritone who has performed, directed and music directed extensively with multiple Capital Region theaters, notably appearing with Opera Saratoga and Park Playhouse. Rounding out the creative team are Oona Newman as Lighting Designer, Vinny Pruchnick as Sound Designer, Wren DiCocco as Costume Designer, Jennie Canale as Hair and Makeup Designer, Kimberly Collins as Props Designer, and Jennie Sinnott as Scenic Consultant.
