Putting It Together: Hubbard Hall Theater Company’s Sunday in the Park with George Brings Professional Artists, NYU Talent, and Community Performers to One Stage
CAMBRIDGE, NY — This June, Hubbard Hall Theater Company presents Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece Sunday in the Park with George, bringing together an extraordinary company of professional actors, emerging artists, and community performers in a production that celebrates the collaborative spirit at the heart of both theater and artistic creation.
Directed by Dianna Heldman with music direction by Richard Cherry, Sunday in the Park with George runs June 19–28, 2026, at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, New York, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM.
Inspired by Georges Seurat’s iconic painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Sunday in the Park with George explores the tension between life, love, legacy, and the ongoing pursuit of artistic truth. Widely regarded as one of the greatest musicals ever written, the work follows Seurat as he struggles to complete his revolutionary masterpiece while balancing his artistic ambitions and personal relationships. A century later, the story shifts to his fictional descendant, George, an artist facing his own creative crisis and searching for inspiration in an increasingly disconnected world.
“Sunday in the Park with George explores the joy, obsession, uncertainty, and perseverance that come with dedicating yourself to a creative life,” said Erin Harrington, Executive Director of Hubbard Hall. “That’s reflected in the artists who have come together for this production. From professional Equity actors to emerging performers from NYU and longtime community theater artists from our region, each brings a unique perspective and a shared commitment to the creative process. Together they embody the very questions at the heart of the musical: Why do we create? What do we leave behind? And how do artists inspire those who come after them?”
Director Dianna Heldman brings an extraordinary artistic and educational background to the production. A mezzo-soprano who performed for more than three decades with major opera companies throughout the United States, Heldman made her New York debut at Weill Hall before joining the New York City Opera, where she performed principal roles and completed three national tours. Today, she serves as Associate Professor of Vocal Performance and Associate Director of Applied Voice at New York University, where she has spent decades mentoring and training the next generation of performers.
Several cast members are current and former students from NYU’s vocal performance program and are spending their summer in Hubbard Hall’s LoveJoy Artist Residency, living and creating on campus while gaining professional production experience. They perform alongside veteran community theater artists from throughout the region and professional Equity actors leading the company, creating the kind of collaborative artistic environment that has long been central to Hubbard Hall’s work. By bringing together artists at different stages of their creative journeys, the production reflects Hubbard Hall’s commitment to fostering meaningful artistic exchange, supporting emerging talent, and building community through the performing arts.
Audiences will have an opportunity to experience the music before opening night during a special preview concert at the ’62 Center for Theatre & Dance in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on Monday, June 15 at 7:30 PM. Featuring selections from the score performed by members of the cast and accompanied by piano, the intimate evening serves as both a fundraiser and a first look at Hubbard Hall’s upcoming fully staged production.
The concert highlights some of Sondheim’s most beloved songs while offering audiences a glimpse into a musical that continues to resonate with artists and audiences nearly four decades after its premiere.
A poetic, layered, and profoundly human theatrical experience, Sunday in the Park with George examines the sacrifices and rewards of artistic creation while celebrating the enduring power of connection. Through its sweeping score, richly drawn characters, and timeless themes, the musical asks what we leave behind, what inspires us to create, and how art can connect us across generations.
