Frances Perkins was the first female Secretary of Labor and first woman to be a Cabinet member–a position she held for 12 years. During that time she established Social Security, the 40 hour work week, the WPA, and the Fair Labor Standards Act (to name a few of her achievements). As one audience member said: “I always thought these things were done by a bunch of men wearing ties.
