Gab Reisman’s funny and fiercely theatrical family drama runs October 1–11 in Catskill
CATSKILL, N.Y. — Three estranged sisters reunite in the backyard of their late father’s home—and revive the wildly inventive childhood game through which they once performed Shakespeare’s “King Lear”—in Gab Reisman’s “Storm Still,” running October 1–11 at Bridge Street Theatre.
Directed by Jasmine Roth, the production features Katherine Callaway as Cordelia, Jess Kadish as Regan, and Elizabeth Loycano as Goneril, with scenic design by Mark Perry.
Over the course of a single late-summer evening, the sisters sort through a lifetime of clothing, furniture, and family history while launching into a fast-and-loose reenactment of Shakespeare’s tragedy. They trade characters, turn household objects into crowns and costumes, and each take her turn playing Lear—transforming the backyard into both a kingdom at war and the landscape of their shared childhood.
As the game unfolds, so do sharply different memories of the father they have lost and the choices each sister made as he declined. Part eulogy, part drinking game, and part childhood make-believe, “Storm Still” explores grief, caregiving, estrangement, and the complicated ways families inherit—and carry—both love and harm.
Playwright and director Ashleigh Ann Gardner called the play “a lovely, buoyant, effervescent, female-centric re-thinking of one of Shakespeare’s most heart-wrenching plays.”
Katherine Callaway makes her Bridge Street Theatre debut as Cordelia. Her regional credits include “John Proctor Is the Villain” at Huntington Theatre Company; “Haunted” at Company One; “Rooted” and “Be Here Now” at Lyric Stage Boston; “Sugar” at Fresh Ink Theatre; “The Suppliant Women” at Apollinaire Theatre Company; and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Boston Theater Company. A West Virginia native, Callaway holds a BFA in Acting from Emerson College. Her new play “Women of Eden” will receive its debut reading this November with Fork & Shoe Theater Co-op.
Jess Kadish returns to the role of Regan, which she previously performed in “King Lear” with Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. Her regional credits include work with American Shakespeare Center, Renaissance Theatre, 16th Street Theater, The Gift Theatre, and New Jewish Theatre. Recent New York appearances include “Love’s Labor’s Lost” with Back Room Shakespeare Project and Catskill Mountain Shakespeare, and “Say Gay Plays” with Voyage Theater Company at NYU Skirball. Kadish holds an MFA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and is a longtime company member of Chicago’s 2nd Story collective.
Elizabeth Loycano makes her Bridge Street Theatre debut as Goneril. Her Broadway credits include “The Phantom of the Opera,” directed by Hal Prince; “Dracula, the Musical,” directed by Des McAnuff; and “The Woman in White” and “Oklahoma!,” both directed by Trevor Nunn. Her Off-Broadway credits include “Jerry Springer: The Opera,” “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” and Barry Manilow’s “Harmony.” Her film and television appearances include “Paint,” “Memory,” “Demolition,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “FBI: Most Wanted,” “The Affair,” “Blue Bloods,” “The Blacklist,” and “Law & Order: SVU.”
Director Jasmine Roth is a director and choreographer whose work examines individual, political, and relational transformation while centering stories of women and queerness. Roth is a resident director with Neurodivergent Plays and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Union College in Schenectady, where they teach performance and directing. They previously served as Director of Education at Arizona Theatre Company and hold an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, where they were a John Wells Fellow. Their recent directing credits include “Hamlet,” “Witch,” “You on the Moors Now,” “Dance Nation,” “Men on Boats,” “Matilda,” and “Macbeth.” “Storm Still” marks Roth’s Bridge Street Theatre debut.
“Storm Still” will be performed October 1–11, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. at Bridge Street Theatre, 44 West Bridge Street in Catskill, New York.
