Albany Civic Theater
Auditions for “Seminar” by Theresa Rebeck
Directed by Laura Darling
November 15 and 16, sign-ups begin at 7:00 pm at Albany Civic Theater
Albany Civic Theater is located at 235 Second Avenue in Albany, NY. The main entrance is around the side of the building on Sand St.
Set in present-day New York City, Seminar follows four young writers — Kate, Martin, Douglas, and Izzy — and their professor, Leonard. Each student has paid Leonard $5,000 for a ten-week writing seminar to be held in Kate’s Upper West Side apartment to improve their craft. As tensions arise and romance falls, they clash over their writing, their relations, and their futures.
Available roles:
Leonard: (Male, 50+) The seminar’s professor, he has long, dramatic history as a writer and can be a real jerk.
Martin: (Male, 20’s-30’s) A writer who is struggling financially. He is afraid to show his work to anyone but is very talented.
Douglas: (Male, 20’s-30’s) Nephew of a famous playwright. He can actually write, but is constantly accused of “name dropping.” Sporty, “Alpha Male” energy.
Izzy: (Female, 20’s-30’s) Deemed a good writer from the beginning, she is overtly sexy and edgy.
Kate: (Female, 20’s-30’s) Her writing is immediately criticized. She constantly tries to prove herself and has never had to financially struggle. Likely reads way too many Jane Austen novels.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Auditioners should come prepared with a list of conflicts from November to February AND proof of vaccination status.
Rehearsals will be several times a week based upon availability.
