(Pittsfield, MA) March 1, 2022 –Barrington Stage Company, the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, MA, under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, is pleased to welcome Mary Chris Bassman and Dr. Steven Finn to the Board of Trustees.

“Mary Chris’s extraordinary commitment to volunteerism, education and the arts will enrich our Board and Staff and enhance our future. Steve’s world vision and his decades-long passion for the Berkshires and the arts will add a vibrant dimension to the BSC Board,” said Barrington Stage Board President Marita Glodt.

Mary Chris Bassman

After departing successful 20-year private practice for hand therapy, and many summers spent in the Berkshires with their children, Mary Chris and her husband Alan purchased property in the area in 2018 with plans to retire there.

The Bassmans found a kindred home in the Berkshire theater community and imparted their passionate patronage and volunteer careers at Barrington Stage Company which continues to this day.
In 2020, after attending the outdoor shows that Barrington Stage Company produced in the early depths of the Pandemic, they were deeply moved by the courage, effort, and creativity the community, while remaining committed to the missions of providing unique storytelling and performing at a time of great need.

The Bassmans also witnessed first-hand the simultaneous phenomenon of Barrington Stage Company and Berkshire Theatre Group serving as catalysts for setting and maintaining a standard of safety unseen in the dormant industry.

This recognized effort inspired Mary Chris Bassman to facilitate a large grant from her brother and his wife in honor of their theater-loving mother, Mary Anne Gross.

Mary Anne’s legacy lives on in this generous grant, which has been instrumental in sustaining Barrington Stage and Berkshire Theatre Group throughout 2020 and 2021, supporting the true meaning of “the show must go on.”

“I have always been impressed by the quality of the productions at Barrington Stage and by the award-winning Playwright Mentoring Project,” said Ms. Bassman. “I look forward to assisting Barrington Stage in any way I can so that the theatre can continue to have a positive impact on the community that I love.”
