Please prepare 16-32 bars of music from a Broadway show. Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key – no acapella/CD accompaniment. We will also hold a brief movement audition following the vocal auditions. Some auditioners may be asked to stay and read from the script or sing from the show. We are also hoping to have some members of the cast play music in parts of the show (though this is NOT a requirement to audition). If you play an instrument, please indicate this at auditions.
All auditioners should bring a list of conflicts from July – October to the auditions.
Production dates: October 13-22, 2023
Tech week October 7-12 (No conflicts)
At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing… and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion, and belief in the promise of the future. The show also weaves in immediately recognizable historical figures such as Henry Ford, Emma Goldman, Booker T. Washington and many others. Together, the cast confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair… and what it means to live in America.
The show includes diverse music styling including ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from bold brass band marches to delicate waltzes, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems.
