I need to believe there is hope that tomorrow can be better than today.” – Lucy Grossman, THERE IS HOPE

This play is about the belief that you CAN become a better person, you CAN make up for your past mistakes, and you CAN heal old wounds, as long as you maintain hope that tomorrow can be better than today, and I need some special leading lady to help me bring the embodiment of that message to life. I’m talking about none other than the lead female role of Lucy Grossman.

PERFORMANCES: 11/15 (Saturday, 7pm) AND 11/16 (Sunday, 1pm)

LOCATION:  Mt. Ida Preservation Hall, 548 Congress St, Troy NY

SYNOPSIS: Kevin Seward is invited to a party at a club. Not long after he arrives, a friend tells him that his ex-girlfriend Lucy Grossman has arrived, so he decides to leave. On his way out, the play tells two stories: one is of his encounters with the partygoers, and the other consists of flashbacks to their time together. Soon the tension is so thick that the only way to break it would be if he ran into her, but what could be the outcome of such an encounter?

ROLE DESCRIPTION: LUCY GROSSMAN is in her late 30s/early 40s. She is the head nurse of a psychiatric ward, a mother of three, and Kevin’s ex-girlfriend. She is the one who ended the relationship. She doesn’t say half as much as Kevin, but when she does speak, every syllable counts. She achieves this not just with WHAT she says, but HOW she says it: the rhythm of her words, the pauses between them, the pauses between what the other person said and when SHE speaks, the words or syllables she chooses to stress. She left the father of her three children six years ago. Her middle child (Pauly) supposedly has a “behavioral disorder,” but the doctors won’t give him a specific diagnosis (even though this has been going on for YEARS), which means they won’t prescribe him anything. In other words, he has a condition that makes him have violent outbursts, but there is nothing to control it. This has taken a toll on her, yet somehow she is still able to reach deep down inside herself and find the ability to laugh, to be silly, to be sweet, to be loving and attentive. Basically, what I’m saying is that, even though Kevin is in every scene and talks more than any other character, LUCY is the hero of the play.
