The Show

Oscar Levant, 1950s character actor, amazing pianist and famous wit, was also an over-medicated, neurotic mess — a very difficult person but a brilliant talk show guest. This play describes one astonishing evening in 1958 on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jack Parr”, where Oscar seems to have gone down in flames, bringing Parr, NBC and live television with him.

Available Roles –

BOB SARNOFF

The reigning president of NBC during television’s Golden Age. Expensively dressed and intense, 40s or 50s.

JACK PARR

Host of the hottest late-night talk-show on television, The Tonight Show.  Clever, bright and also known as America’s smoothest talker, 30s or 40s.

JUNE LEVANT

Oscar’s wife, attractive and gracious under pressure; seemingly put-upon, but actually has a core of steel, mid 40s.

ALVIN FINNEY

A young medical orderly working in the mental ward at Mt. Sinai, with a droll sense of humor and serious ambition, 20s or 30s, African-American.

MAX WEINBAUM

Jack Parr’s new production assistant. A young man whose ingratiating enthusiasm is matched only by his comic ineptitude, 20s.

GEORGE GERSHWIN

One of the most celebrated composers in American popular music, charming and rakish, with a winning grin, late 30s.

The role of Oscar Levant has been cast.
