Urinetown is a dark comedy that satirizes capitalism, populism, politics, responses to environmental collapse, and the very idea of musical theater itself! Set in a dystopian future, a water shortage from a 20 year long drought has led to a government ban on private toilets. In order to pee, citizens must use public amenities that are controlled by a large, monopolizing corporation that charges high prices for access. If people cannot or will not pay the fee, they are sent off to the mysterious “Urinetown” and never seen again! In the darkness, a rebellion stirs and a hero arises to lead the people. Will they succeed in creating a world where the people can pee for free, or will it be off to Urinetown for them all?
