“Penelope in First Person” | June 19–21, 2026
PUTNEY, VT — A powerful reinterpretation of a classic myth comes to Sandglass Theater this June as part of the New Visions Summer Series. Penelope in First Person, performed by Keely Eastley and directed by Eric Bass, will be presented June 19 and 20 at 7pm and June 21 at 5pm.
Adapted from the book by Canadian poet Sue Goyette, the performance gives voice to Penelope, a character traditionally portrayed as the faithful wife waiting at home during Odysseus’ long journey. In this retelling, Penelope becomes a vivid and complex protagonist who navigates grief, jealousy, humor, longing, and self-discovery.
The work blends poetry, theatrical storytelling, music, and elements of magical realism, revealing Penelope as a woman confronting her life on her own terms.
Eastley is an internationally respected voice teacher who has taught at institutions including Yale School of Drama, NYU, Emerson College, and MIT. As an actor she has performed widely in theater across the United States and New Zealand.
Bass, co-founder of Sandglass Theater, has directed theater and puppetry productions across four continents and has been widely recognized for his contributions to the field of puppet theater.
This production has been developed over the past two years through collaboration between Eastley and Bass, culminating in this premiere presentation at Sandglass.
