THE CURIOUS SAVAGE

by John Patrick

directed by Cathy Lee-Visscher

OCTOBER 7 – 23

The Ghent Playhouse is seeking four actors, aged early 20’s to early 60’s.

Set in the early 1950’s, The Curious Savage is a funny and touching play. Ethel Savage, an eccentric widow who has been left ten million dollars by her late husband, wishes to make the best use of the money, in spite of her grown-up stepchildren’s efforts to get their hands on it. Hoping to “bring her to her senses,” they commit her to a sanatorium where she meets various social misfits, who need the kind of help Mrs. Savage can provide. She soon realizes that she has found happiness with her new friends, and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them, but when she is told there is no reason for her to remain, she is hesitant to go out into a world that at times seems motivated only by greed and dishonesty.

Available Roles:

Fairy May, early 20’s; a young resident of the Cloisters; a compulsive liar, obsessed with having others love her. She is a classic beauty spoiled by the severe arrangement of her hair, steel-rimmed eyeglasses and unimaginative dresses she wears.

Miss Willie, 25-35 years old; an administrative assistant and nurse at the Cloisters, she is very compassionate, treating the “residents” with respect, despite her occasional frustration with them.

Lily Belle Savage, 40’s-early 50’s; Mrs. Savage’s selfish, spoiled stepdaughter. She is very chic, self-confident and assured, but has a quick temper. She is extremely stubborn, haughty and very materialistic. She is rumored to sleep in a tiara.

Titus Savage, 50’s-early 60’s; A state Senator and Mrs. Savage’s greedy stepson. He is Aristocratic and arrogant, just like his siblings. He looks upon the residents of the Cloisters with scorn and disgust, and shows no respect toward anyone, including his brother and sister.

Those younger, who feel they can look and play older, or older, who feel they can look and play younger, are strongly encouraged to audition.

The performance dates are October 7 – 23, 2022, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm and a preview performance on Thursday, October 6 at 7:30pm.

Interested? contact Cathy Lee-Visscher the director at cathyleevisscher@gmail.com or by phone/text (518) 755-9278 by July 6 to schedule an audition.
